Signpost Project
A project by Damien Robinson and Stuart Bowditch
'Signpost' is a site-specific multi-sensory installation where audiences experience sounds recorded as journeys through the town to which it points. Intended as an alternative conception of journeying, the project is aimed at settings outside traditional arts infrastructures.
An initial grant funded the development of a pilot 'signpost', a continuation of our exploration on the use of sound, place and vibrations. Designed to help us develop new work and skills at an advanced professional level, Signpost was unveiled at the 2010 Village Green event in Chalkwell Park on 25th September, and was featured in the Spring 2011 edition of 'Access by Design', the Centre for Accessible Environment's quarterly journal (article posted on our blog page).
'Signpost' will be on show at the Victoria Shopping Centre, Southend, from 1st to 16th July as part of Artside 2011. UPDATE - installation extended to 27 July. Situated on the first floor, it will be easily discovered by regular visitors and those passing through. We will post updates and information on our blog page.
Our longer-term aim is to expand the project creating a network of 'signposts' allowing communities to contribute their recordings and ideas for recordings reflecting their experiences and sense of place. We are currently looking into funding and development opportunities which will allow us to develop this concept - or other related ideas. We are also investigating the potential to incorporate 'green power' into the work. If you'd like to support us, please use the contact form at the top of the page.
